Is AI Giving Your MSP a Midlife Crisis?

👇 Share with the world 🙏

Most established MSPs reach a point where they know exactly who they are. The clients are loyal, the service runs smoothly and the business has a clear identity: the people who keep the IT running.

Then something comes along that makes you question all of it. Right now, for a lot of MSPs, that something is AI.

Your clients are talking about it. Competitors are starting to put it on their websites. And there’s a nagging feeling that what you’ve always been known for won’t be enough for much longer. That’s the MSP midlife crisis. It isn’t a breakdown. It’s the moment you realise it’s time to reinvent, and the only real question is whether you do it on your own terms or wait until it’s forced on you.

Your customers are already sold on AI. Who are they buying it from?

For most of the IT industry’s history, MSPs had to create demand. Cloud, cyber security and compliance all needed explaining before anyone would buy them.

AI flipped that. It went mainstream without anyone in IT selling it. Your clients’ staff are already using it at their desks, in their phones and in their inboxes. Business owners know they need it. They just don’t know what to do with it, how to do it safely or where to start.

That’s a buyer who is solution-aware and actively looking for a guide. In marketing terms, it doesn’t get much better. The risk is that if you’re not seen talking about AI, your clients will assume you’re not the right people to ask, and go and find someone who is.

“But we’re not an AI company”

We hear this all the time. So here’s a question back: five years ago, would you have called yourself a cyber security company?

Most MSPs wouldn’t have. Cyber was something you bolted on: antivirus, an email filter, maybe a firewall. Today it’s at the heart of your proposition, your website and every proposal you send. Nobody gave you permission to become a cyber company. The market changed and you changed with it.

The same thing is happening with AI, only faster. You don’t have to be a data scientist or build your own models. Your clients don’t need that from you. They need someone they already trust to help them use AI properly. Whether you like it or not, that makes you an AI company. The only choice is whether you say so before your competitors do.

AI isn’t a technology sale. It’s a business conversation.

Here’s where many MSPs trip up. They try to sell AI the way they’ve always sold technology: licences, features, a deployment project. But AI isn’t something you install and walk away from.

Think about how Microsoft 365 was often rolled out. Mailboxes moved, the old server switched off, job done. Then nobody showed users how to use Teams or SharePoint, and adoption suffered for years. AI is that lesson on a bigger scale. The value isn’t in turning it on. It’s in understanding how a business works and helping its people change how they work.

That means talking to clients about their departments, their processes and their people, not the blinking lights in the comms cupboard. It’s uncomfortable for a lot of technically minded teams. It’s also exactly the conversation that turns a support provider into a trusted adviser.

What an AI proposition for your clients actually looks like

A good AI proposition is less about the tech and more about guiding businesses through change. For most MSPs, it can be built from things you’re already close to:

  • AI readiness reviews that look at data, security and governance before anyone switches anything on.
  • Workshops and process mapping with departments to find where AI will genuinely save time.
  • Adoption and training so people actually use the tools they’re paying for, and use them safely.
  • Ongoing guidance, built into your managed service, as the tools and the business keep evolving.

It also helps to have done it yourself. You rolled out cloud internally before you sold it. Using AI in your own business gives you the stories, examples and confidence to sell it credibly.

Now tell the world (because nobody else will)

Having an AI proposition is half the job. If your website, your content and your sales conversations still only talk about support desks and response times, nobody will know you can help with AI.

This is where MSP marketing earns its keep:

  • Put AI front and centre. Give it a proper page on your website, a clear service name and a reason to get in touch, not a buzzword buried in your services list.
  • Educate before you sell. Blogs, guides, webinars and events that help business owners understand AI position you as the expert long before they need to buy.
  • Use AI as a stepping stone. Most MSPs try to go from first contact straight to a full support contract. That’s like proposing on a first date. An AI workshop or readiness session is a low-risk way to start the relationship and earn trust.
  • Start with the clients you already have. Your existing customers are the easiest people to have the AI conversation with, and the most likely to leave if someone else has it first.

Right now, most MSPs are quiet on AI. That makes it one of the few areas where you can still stand out instead of shouting into a crowded market.

Don’t wait for permission

For a lot of MSPs, AI has been the topic everyone agrees matters and nobody quite owns. As the new year approaches, that needs to change. The MSPs that stake their claim now will become the go-to AI advisers in their area. The ones that wait will spend next year explaining why they didn’t.

At Wingman, we help MSPs build an AI proposition their clients will actually buy, then take it to market with the MSP marketing to back it up. If your MSP is ready to stop thinking about AI and start being known for it, let’s talk.
